High Altitude Cooking

Cooking a this altitude is fun!! Keep in mind the altitude when cooking or baking. A boiled egg takes much longer. Just remember the relationship between altitude and air pressure add the following facts. As air pressure drops, water boils at lower temperature. At seal level, water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Each 500— foot increase in altitude, water boils at a relatively low temperature and since heat, not boiling, cooks food more time is required for food to reach the desired internal cooking temperature. Additionally, water evaporates more quickly than at seal level.

Foods cooked by boiling take more time to reach cooking temperature.

Sea level temperatures for candies and frostings must be lower at altitude increases to prevent over concentration of the sugar mixture from excessive evaporation of the water.

Recipes must be adjusted for flour mixtures that contain considerable amounts of sugar and shortening, and are leavened with carbon dioxide gas from baking powder or soad and acid. When air is used for leavening, as in angel cakes, or stream is used, as inTop of Page popovers, few adjustments are necessary.

High Altitude Gardening

Due to the Colorado altitude, low humidity, intense sunlight, soil conditions and totally unpredictable weather, the planting of flowers or gardening can trick you. During Spring , we can have stretches of hot weather, lasting days or weeks immediately followed by a week of snow and hard freezes. In winter, the temperature can suddenly rise (in matter of minutes) from below freezing to almost tee-shirt weather due to "Chinook winds." Many plants and gardens in Denver enjoy the growing season of 159 day (May 6- Oct 12) . But don’t be fooled, Indian Summers are wonderful hereTop of Page and the growing season may vary.

Precipitation varies with respect to elevations and location of any given area. During Cold months, Colorado’s Front Range occasionally experiences Chinooks (fast moving up to 100mph), warm winds — which can cause local temperatures to rise as much as 50 degrees in just a matter of a few hours.

Our first snow can be as early as September and as late at July or August. Often the snow falls one day and melts away the next. Our winters are fairly mild however thereTop of Page have been a few great blizzards.
